Walk down any appliance aisle and almost every portable unit is an **ENERGY STAR dehumidifier** — the blue logo is on nearly everything, which makes it useless as a tiebreaker. The number that actually separates a frugal machine from a thirsty one is the **Integrated Energy Factor (IEF)**: liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour, measured under the Department of Energy’s standard test.

There’s also a stricter tier, **ENERGY STAR Most Efficient**, reserved for the highest-scoring models in each size class. Between the IEF and ENERGY STAR’s rated kWh per year, you can compare any two certified models on equal footing — something you can’t do with the pint claims printed on boxes, which some brands measure in hot, swampy conditions that inflate the number.

We ranked this list on ENERGY STAR’s certified-product data. If you want the full cost math, our guide to [how much electricity a dehumidifier uses](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/guides/how-much-electricity-does-a-dehumidifier-use/) walks through it.

On the certified numbers, the **AEOCKY Leo-Lite3** is the most energy efficient portable dehumidifier most homes can buy, rated 2.21 liters per kWh and one of only nine models in its class to earn Most Efficient status.

## 1. AEOCKY Leo-Lite3 Dehumidifier (sold as 140 pints) — Best overall efficiency

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=AEOCKY%20Leo-Lite3%20Dehumidifier%20sold%20as%20140%20pints&tag=sktiger-20)

**Pros**

- Rated 2.21 L/kWh, near the top of its class
- ENERGY STAR Most Efficient (shared listing)
- Lowest rated annual energy use of the large portables here
- Three-year warranty per AEOCKY’s policy

**Cons**

- Box capacity is inflated — about 45 pints under the DOE test
- No built-in pump on this version

**Why we picked it:** This is the rare mainstream Amazon dehumidifier that beats Midea and Frigidaire on certified efficiency. It shares an ENERGY STAR listing with AEOCKY’s pump-equipped Leo-003, so you get the same rating without paying for a pump you may not need.

**Performance:** ENERGY STAR rates the chassis at 44.94 pints a day under DOE conditions at 2.21 L/kWh, for 438 kWh a year. Only nine of 273 certified portables in the 25.01–50 pint class meet the Most Efficient bar, and this is one of them. The “140 pint” on the box is measured at 95°F and 95% humidity, so size it as a 45-pint machine. Our [best AEOCKY dehumidifier](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/best/best-aeocky-dehumidifier/) guide maps every model name to its certified rating.

**Worth knowing:** If you have a floor drain, run a gravity hose. If not, consider the Leo-003 with pump or another model from our [best dehumidifier with pump](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/best/best-dehumidifier-with-pump/) list.

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Capacity | 44.94 pints/day (DOE) |
| Efficiency | 2.21 L/kWh, Most Efficient |
| Rated energy | 438 kWh/year |
| Drainage | Bucket or gravity hose |
| Best for | Basements, large rooms |

## 2. AEOCKY Rhea-001 Dehumidifier (sold as 80 pints) — Best for a single room

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FJ2M51KY?tag=sktiger-20&linkCode=ll1)

**Pros**

- ENERGY STAR Most Efficient in the small-capacity class
- Rated just 285 kWh a year
- Slim body tucks into a bedroom or office

**Cons**

- Real DOE capacity is about 25 pints, not 80
- Less efficient per liter than AEOCKY’s larger chassis

**Why we picked it:** Most single rooms don’t need a basement-sized compressor. The Rhea-001 is rated at roughly a third less electricity per year than the 140-pint chassis, which is the smarter trade for a bedroom, office or small finished basement.

**Performance:** ENERGY STAR lists it at 24.50 pints a day and 1.86 L/kWh, comfortably above the 1.70 floor for its class. AEOCKY lists 44–53 dB across fan speeds. For comparison, the Midea Cube 20 (MAD20S1QWT) is rated 1.70 L/kWh — exactly the certification minimum — and isn’t on the Most Efficient list, though it has other strengths covered in our [best Midea dehumidifier](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/best/best-midea-dehumidifier/) guide.

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Capacity | 24.50 pints/day (DOE) |
| Efficiency | 1.86 L/kWh, Most Efficient |
| Rated energy | 285 kWh/year |
| Noise | 44–53 dB (manufacturer) |
| Best for | Bedroom, office, small basement |

## 3. Midea Cube 50-Pint Dehumidifier (MAD50S1QWT) — Best value for large rooms

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GL7B1FC8?tag=sktiger-20&linkCode=ll1)

**Pros**

- Removes about 10% more water per day than AEOCKY’s big chassis
- Meets ENERGY STAR at the 2.01 L/kWh threshold
- Compact cube design with lift-out tank base
- Established brand with a strong reliability record

**Cons**

- Not on the Most Efficient list
- Rated slightly higher annual energy use

**Why we picked it:** If you’d rather buy from a better-known brand, the Cube 50 is the honest runner-up. It misses the Most Efficient bar by about 0.2 L/kWh but moves more water per day than any AEOCKY model.

**Performance:** ENERGY STAR rates it at 49.67 pints a day, 2.01 L/kWh and 515 kWh a year. Independent reviewers have reported a running draw of about 512 watts. Frigidaire’s FHDD5034Y1 carries the same 2.01 rating at 521 kWh a year, so the two cost almost exactly the same to run.

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Capacity | 49.67 pints/day (DOE) |
| Efficiency | 2.01 L/kWh |
| Rated energy | 515 kWh/year |
| Drainage | Bucket or gravity hose |
| Best for | Large rooms, basements |

## 4. Santa Fe Compact70 Dehumidifier — Best for crawl spaces

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HCLL7FY?tag=sktiger-20&linkCode=ll1)

**Pros**

- ENERGY STAR Most Efficient recognition in 2024
- Compact cabinet hangs between floor joists
- Rated 70 pints a day for spaces up to about 2,200 sq ft

**Cons**

- No current ENERGY STAR IEF listing to compare
- Professional-grade price

**Why we picked it:** A crawl space unit runs almost nonstop for months, so efficiency matters even more than it does on a portable you can switch off. The Compact70 pairs a Most Efficient badge with a footprint built for tight clearances.

**Performance:** Santa Fe rates it at 70 pints a day for sealed crawl spaces and basements up to roughly 2,200 square feet. Its roughly 12 × 12 × 21-inch cabinet is designed to fit between joists. We couldn’t find a current ENERGY STAR IEF listing, so it isn’t directly comparable to the portables above. See our [best crawl space dehumidifier](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/best/best-crawl-space-dehumidifier/) roundup for alternatives.

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Capacity | 70 pints/day (manufacturer) |
| Coverage | Up to ~2,200 sq ft |
| Efficiency | ENERGY STAR Most Efficient (2024) |
| Type | Crawl space / basement |
| Best for | Sealed crawl spaces |

## 5. Aprilaire E080 Whole-House Dehumidifier — Best ducted whole-house

[Check price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQRYS6N1?tag=sktiger-20&linkCode=ll1)

**Pros**

- Rated 2.35 L/kWh, the highest here
- Bucketless, permanently drained design
- Most Efficient, like its E100 and E130 siblings
- Five-year warranty

**Cons**

- Needs ductwork integration and usually a pro install
- Sold as 80 pints but rated 65 under the DOE whole-home test

**Why we picked it:** For a system that dries the whole house through your HVAC ducts, the E080 combines the top efficiency rating on this list with a drain you never have to think about.

**Performance:** Aprilaire markets it at 80 pints a day for up to 4,400 square feet; ENERGY STAR’s whole-home test lists it at 65 pints a day, 2.35 L/kWh and 632 kWh a year. The larger E100 and E130 earn the same 2.35 rating. Our [best whole-house dehumidifier](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/best/best-whole-house-dehumidifier/) guide compares the ducted tier.

| Spec | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Capacity | 65 pints/day (DOE whole-home) |
| Efficiency | 2.35 L/kWh, Most Efficient |
| Rated energy | 632 kWh/year |
| Drainage | Continuous, bucketless |
| Best for | Whole-house ducted systems |

## Dehumidifier efficiency, by the numbers

- **2.01 L/kWh** — ENERGY STAR minimum for a 25.01–50 pint portable (Version 6.0)
- **9 of 273** — Portables in that class that meet the Most Efficient criteria
- **22.5%** — Share of all portable listings carrying the Most Efficient flag

ENERGY STAR’s Version 6.0 rules, in effect since October 1, 2025, set minimums of 1.70 L/kWh for portables up to 25 pints, 2.01 for 25.01–50 pints and 3.30 above that. Ducted whole-home units need 2.22 to 3.81 depending on case size. The federal legal minimum for the middle class is lower still, at 1.60.

## How we pick energy efficient dehumidifiers

We don’t lab-test, and for efficiency we don’t need to: ENERGY STAR publishes certified IEF, DOE capacity and rated kWh per year for every listed model, all measured the same way. We ranked on those figures, then checked manuals for drainage and operating range, and read owner reviews for reliability problems that would cancel out any savings.

We ignored box capacity claims and nameplate wattage entirely. A label reading 8.5 amps at 115 volts (about 978 watts) describes a wiring maximum, not what the machine actually draws while running.

## What to look for in an energy efficient dehumidifier

- **The IEF, not just the logo:** Every certified unit clears a minimum. Look up the actual liters-per-kWh rating in ENERGY STAR’s public dataset.
- **The DOE pint rating:** Some brands, AEOCKY and Waykar among them, headline capacity at 95°F and 95% humidity — roughly three times the DOE figure measured at 65°F and 60%.
- **Rated kWh per year:** This is the closest thing to a bill estimate, and it’s measured identically across brands.
- **The right size for the room:** An oversized compressor short-cycles and wastes its efficiency edge. Our [dehumidifier size guide](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/guides/dehumidifier-size-guide/) helps you match pints to square feet.
- **Easy filter access:** A clogged filter or dusty coil makes the fan and compressor work harder. Keep up with basic [dehumidifier maintenance](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/guides/dehumidifier-maintenance/).

## Do dehumidifiers use a lot of electricity?

Not as much as most people fear. A certified 50-pint-class portable is rated at roughly 440–520 kWh a year, and a small-room unit closer to 285. That’s real money over a humid season, but far less than a central air conditioner — and the gap between an average and a top-rated model is smaller still.

Less than the marketing implies, but it’s real. At the EIA’s August 2026 average residential rate of 18.44 cents per kWh, the AEOCKY Leo-003’s rated 438 kWh costs about $81 a year, versus about $95 for a Midea Cube 50’s 515 kWh — a gap of roughly $14.

| Efficiency | Electricity cost per gallon removed |
| --- | --- |
| 2.21 L/kWh (top of class) | About $0.32 |
| 2.01 L/kWh (ENERGY STAR floor) | About $0.35 |
| 1.60 L/kWh (federal minimum) | About $0.44 |

*At 18.44 cents per kWh.*

> **Don’t overpay for a small saving:** A Most Efficient model with a pump can cost a couple hundred dollars more upfront than a standard ENERGY STAR unit — and save only about $14 a year. Buy efficiency where the unit will run hardest: crawl spaces, basements and whole-house systems.

## Efficiency myths to ignore

- **Bigger always wastes more.** Not per liter. Larger compressors are usually more efficient, which is why the DOE sets higher bars for bigger classes. AEOCKY’s big chassis beats its own small Rhea-001 on liters per kWh.
- **Desiccant means efficient.** Renewable silica units draw no power while working, but they move very little water. Electric rotary desiccants use a heater and cost more per pint than a good compressor model — buy one for cold spaces, not savings. Our [best desiccant dehumidifier](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/best/best-desiccant-dehumidifier/) guide explains when they make sense.
- **Unplugging saves money.** Mold can start growing on damp materials within 24 to 48 hours, per the EPA. An efficient unit you leave running beats a power-hungry one you switch off to protect the bill.

## The bottom line

On ENERGY STAR’s certified numbers, the **AEOCKY Leo-Lite3** is the most efficient portable dehumidifier for most homes, and the **Rhea-001** is the efficient pick for a single room. Choose the **Midea Cube 50** if you want more water per day from an established brand and can accept about $14 a year in extra electricity. For crawl spaces and ducted systems that run all season, the **Santa Fe Compact70** and **Aprilaire E080** are where efficiency pays off fastest.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the most energy efficient ENERGY STAR dehumidifier?

Among portables, AEOCKY’s 140-pint-class chassis (sold as the Leo-Lite3, Rhea-003 and Leo-003) is rated 2.21 L/kWh and meets ENERGY STAR’s Most Efficient criteria. For a ducted whole-house system, the Aprilaire E080 leads at 2.35 L/kWh.

### What does ENERGY STAR Most Efficient mean on a dehumidifier?

It’s a tier above standard certification for the top performers in each capacity class. In ENERGY STAR’s current data, every Most Efficient portable in the 25.01–50 pint class is rated at least 2.20 L/kWh, versus the 2.01 minimum for basic certification.

### Do dehumidifiers use a lot of electricity?

Moderately. ENERGY STAR rates large portables at roughly 440–520 kWh a year and small-room models around 285 kWh — on the order of $50 to $95 a year at 18.44 cents per kWh. See our [electricity use guide](https://www.enthusiastreview.com/guides/how-much-electricity-does-a-dehumidifier-use/) for the full math.

### How much does an efficient dehumidifier save per year?

Comparing a 438 kWh/yr model with a 515 kWh/yr model, the difference is about $14 a year at 18.44 cents per kWh. Savings are bigger for units that run most of the season, like crawl space and whole-house systems.

### Why is the pint rating on the box higher than ENERGY STAR’s?

Some brands measure capacity at 95°F and 95% humidity, which inflates the figure. The DOE test uses 65°F and 60%, which reflects a typical basement. Compare DOE pints to DOE pints.

### Are desiccant dehumidifiers more energy efficient?

Not for whole rooms. Renewable mini desiccants use no power while absorbing but remove very little water. Electric desiccant units run a heater and usually cost more per pint than a good compressor model, though they work better in cold spaces.

### Does a bigger dehumidifier use more electricity?

It draws more power, but it usually removes more water per kWh and runs for shorter stretches. What predicts your bill is the IEF and rated kWh per year, not the capacity printed on the box.
